History

The City of Kamloops (the City) and Interior Health (IH) have been working collaboratively since the mid-1990s as part of the British Columbia Heart Health Coalition.

By the mid-2000s, the City and IH were working collaboratively on several projects, including the Healthy Life Network. This regional committee shared best practices at monthly meetings and worked together to distribute periodic grant monies to regional projects that focused on primary and secondary prevention of chronic disease. By 2007, Kamloops was selected as the host agency to coordinate and allocate grant monies for the Community Action for Health project. Relying on a committee comprised of regional representatives, this project allocated grants to committees who developed community projects to improve the environment or policy for Healthy Eating and Active Living.

As a result of this early success, both parties began working to increase the capacity of a key program within the IHA; the Vascular Improvement Program's (VIP) cardiac rehabilitation exercise component. The program was first relocated to the MacArthur Island Sports centre from which it was relocated to the Tournament Capital Centre following its completion in 2007. This helped to bridge the gap from clinic to community where participants can continue with exercise once the program is complete.

The City and IH saw the need to formalize their partnership in the form of a Strategic Health Alliance (SHA), which was signed and implemented in November 2008.

The Alliance supports many programs including the Lung Health Program, On Track Program, Sensational Survivors Program, Aquatic Gentle Fit and many associated graduate programs.

The Keep On Moving project is one of the latest innovations of the Strategic Health Alliance Committee. This project will help to connect participants to appropriate exercise programs in their community. Additionally, it will also act as a resource for physicians to locate gentler exercise options for patients as well as chronic disease management services available.
